Nz Commitment To Paris Agreement
New Zealand has announced an unconditional target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5% from our 1990 emissions by 2020. With this goal, our commitments will continue under the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol to limit emissions to 1990 levels. It is managed under rules applicable to the second commitment period 2013-2020 of the Kyoto Protocol. New Zealand and the other parties to UnFCCC Schedule 1 regularly report on progress in implementing our commitments. Our biennial report focuses on supporting New Zealand`s developing countries in climate. It also shows that New Zealand supports the development of the low-emissions agricultural industry. Shaw asked other countries to review their commitments and said he had informed an Alliance of Small Island States meeting overnight. The UN climate change should take stock of collective ambitions in the next round of climate talks, called cop26 – and how far it falls short of what is needed to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. Current commitments put the world on track for more than 3C warming.
The review should also take into account changes in the scientific community since the commitment was tabled in 2016, in particular the IPCC`s 2018 Special Report on Global Warming, which painted a bleak picture and called for more action. The Cartegena Dialogue is an informal group of some 30 countries working together for a comprehensive, ambitious and legally binding climate change agreement and committed to transforming their own economies into low-carbon economies. In Cancun, New Zealand has voluntarily committed to reducing or limiting greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. Cancun`s voluntary commitment is outside the Kyoto Protocol. Ninety countries have made voluntary commitments – these countries account for more than 80% of global emissions and account for 90% of the global economy. New Zealand has committed, as part of a comprehensive global agreement, to reduce its emissions by 10-20% from 1990 levels by 2020. Our promise has five conditions: at the Copenhagen conference, New Zealand committed to funding rapid financing for developing countries. New Zealand has made commitments on climate change under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (agreement), the Paris Agreement and the Kyoto Protocol.
