Abraham Agreement Meaning
Joe Biden, Trump`s opponent in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, welcomed the agreement because it „builds on the efforts of several governments to promote broader Arab-Israeli openness, including the Obama Biden administration`s efforts to build on the Arab peace initiative.“ The agreement signed Tuesday by Israel, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates on the southern lawn of the White House – an agreement known as the Abraham Agreement – is not a remote peace treaty, as President Donald Trump has touted. But this is a remarkable achievement – perhaps the beginning of geopolitical change in the Middle East – and Trump has played a facilitation role, in some ways central. The presence of representatives of the United Arab Emirates earlier this year, when President Trump announced the peace plan between Israel and the Palestinians, indicated increasing cooperation between Israel and the UAE. They have now reached a historic agreement called the Abraham Agreement, which is perhaps the most important step towards regional peace for the Jewish state. The United Arab Emirates joins the short list of Middle Eastern countries that, in addition to Jordan and Egypt, have diplomatic relations with Israel. However, the agreement also marks a new alliance in the Middle East in response to heightened tensions with Iran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has warned the United Arab Emirates that it will have dangerous consequences for the agreement. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called the agreement a „huge mistake“ and warned the United Arab Emirates that Israel was not safe in the Gulf.
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif spoke of a betrayal of Arab and non-Arab countries in the Middle East. A group of protesters with less than 100 residents gathered in front of the VaE Embassy in Tehran on 15 August, chanting „Death to America“ and „Death to Israel“. Protesters also burned Israel`s flag. The conservative newspaper Kayhan, whose editor-in-chief is appointed by Iran`s Supreme Leader, warned that the agreement had made the United Arab Emirates a „legitimate and simple objective.“ The Tunisian People`s Representatives` Assembly criticized the agreement and said it was in solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Many people protested outside the United Arab Emirates Embassy in Tunis, people burned Israeli flags and photos of UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, while supporting the Palestinian cause for independence. Tunisian President Kais Saied then said that Tunisia was not interfering in the agreement and would not oppose, but would support the Palestinians. „In addition to Egypt and Jordan, two other Arab states have signed peace agreements with Israel.
